Helping young people make the right choices. --------------------------- Workshops Web Detective - uses ICT interactively and is designed to teach students factual information and widen their knowledge and experience of issues faced by the emergency services and transport providers. It is created in a Microsoft PowerPoint with hyper links attached to the agencies websites. Millionaire Game - is an interactive quiz using strategic questions designed to target particular pieces of information students need to be aware of. We took our agencies'key problem areas and designed the questions around them. Questions might include how often to change smoke alarm batteries, creating a fire safety plan, and the dangers of playing on railway lines. The pupils input their answers individually on the keypads but it is the group score that decides whether they go up the money chart towards the million pounds. They don't go back to zero if the group answer is less than 50% as this could be demoralising for some pupils and we need them concentrating so they are motivated to hear the answers. We use an active voting system working through the classrooms interactive whiteboard. Vehicle Tour - is dependant on the agency vehicles available. We have had Fire vehicles, Police Horses, Police Dogs, Ambulances, British Transport Police, Bus operators, Police Armed Respons, Matrix, so students can explore and realise they are community vehicles which they may one day need to come to their assistance. Agencies explain to students about the importance of the equipment on board vehicles and their role in making communities safer. The hands on approach of the Paramedics, Officers with the Police Horses and Dogs appeals to a lot of pupils. We believe agencies achieve most by showing pupils how their equipment and animals are there to protect them and not to catch them. The latter implies that they are or will be committing crimes and this is not the message we want to put out. Drama Workshop - We commissioned Mojo Theatre to write and perform the play – ‘Charlie's Choice' which addresses issues regarding anti-social behaviour in the community. The play, together with the following drama workshops, challenges the responsibilities and consequences of young people who choose to carry out anti-social acts. The performance allows the young people to get a fuller picture of anti-social behaviour and brings home to them the effects of such behaviour and provokes discussion around victims, responsibility and change.
